Essential Products for Winterizing Your Motorhome

essential products for
Winterising your motorhome

Properly winterising your motorhome can mean the difference between maximising its life and your motorhome growing old before its time. Though winterising does take some work, we recommend all motorhome owners embrace it. Doing things like draining your water system and keeping your leisure batteries charged guarantees a motorhome is ready to get back into service every spring.

We recommend the following essential products for winterising your motorhome:

1. Manual drain down system

Given that draining the water system is the most critical aspect of motorhome winterisation, it is a good idea to invest in a manual drain-down system. It consists of an air compressor and a variety of accessories that forcibly removes water from pipes, tanks, etc. Though not absolutely necessary, this handy little tool eliminates all worries of leaving water in the system.

2. water tank heater

If you plan to camp during the winter, a water tank heater is an indispensable accessory. Some tank heaters go directly in the tank while others attach to the outside. They are designed to cycle on and off as the temperature dictates. A water tank heater ensures that your freshwater tank never freezes, even in cold weather. Tank heaters can be used for wastewater tanks as well, but most motorhome owners do not bother with the extra expense.

3. water tank installation

In the absence of a tank heater, you can slow down freezing water by insulating your water tanks. Insulation alone is normally sufficient if you keep your motorhome heated to at least 10°C while on the road. If it gets too cold for too long though, insulation may not be enough.

4. Insulated Windscreen Cover

An insulated windscreen cover serves two purposes. First, it prevents annoying light from waking you up when you are camping. Second, it maintains a warmer temperature inside, thereby preventing condensation. This is a must-have for every motorhome owner who likes to travel in cold weather. You might find a windscreen cover invaluable in the spring and autumn – as well as winter!

5. fridge vent covers

6. Electronic Dehumidifiers

Moisture is one of the biggest threats to motorhomes during the winter months. It is a good idea to have at least a couple of electronic dehumidifiers on hand. Buy battery-operated units and you can keep your motorhome nice and dry without having to hook up to mains power.

An electronic humidifier can be placed inside a cabinet, wardrobe, or anywhere else subject to moisture. Check it every week or so and recharge when necessary. Electronic humidifiers have colour-coded markings to let you know how they are doing.

7. Supplemental Heater

8. snow chains

Snow chains are essential if you plan to take your motorhome out during the winter. Snow chains go on over your tyres to provide extra traction on snowy and icy roads. They are required in some European locales under severe weather conditions. Even when they are not required, you may find them quite helpful.

As a side note, we encourage motorhome owners to check with local authorities before travelling. You do not want to be caught in a locale that requires chains and not have a set on board.

9. spare propane tank

10. winter cover

It is a good idea to clean your motorhome with a specialised winter exterior fluid prior to storage. For extra protection, consider a winter cover. A good cover envelops the entire motorhome from roof to wheel arches. It should have some sort of strap system to hold it in place.

The best covers on the market are made from breathable fabric that prevents condensation and inhibits mould growth. These are the most expensive types of covers, but they are well worth the investment. The only caveat here is to make sure you get one that is commensurate to the size of your motorhome. A cover that is too big may be difficult to secure against the wind.
