Achieving a Reliable Water Supply In Your Caravan And Motorhome

Tips for Achieving a Reliable Water Supply in
Your Caravan and Motorhome

The average four berth caravan or motorhome uses around 23 litres of water each day. This is the water used for washing the dishes, making cups of tea, having a shower and flushing the toilet. If your pitch is not connected to mains water, then you obviously need to get this amount of water by other means, and this is usually via a water tap that is on site and then carrying the water to the caravan. How you choose to do this can ensure that you maintain that reliable water supply for daily use.

Below we explore some top tips for achieving a reliable water supply in your caravan or motorhome.

When carrying water

You will need a sturdy and reliable water carrier to transport water from the tap to your pitch. For small amounts of water that will be placed directly into a sink for washing up purposes, or a kettle, then a jerry can will do the job well. However, when you need a lot of water to power a shower, toilet and to have a constant and efficient water supply throughout the day, then the best method is to use an aquaroll. As the name suggests, you can roll this water carrier from the tap all the way to your pitch with ease. It allows you to transport up to 40 litres of water at a time. Many of these water carriers also come with a handy filler inlet, to make filling easier, while ensuring that no water is wasted.

The water pump

Most modern caravans will be able to use a water pump of 12 volts. This is needed to pump water around the water supply. A water pump really is the most efficient way to utilise water for all your daily needs, and is well worth the investment for ease of use and efficiency.

Using the water pump safely

There are a few rules that you should follow when using any water pump. This is not only to keep you and your loved ones safe, but it will ensure it keeps working well and for a very long time.

If you go out for the day, then be sure to turn the pump off. Not only will this prevent any waste, but it will also preserve the life of your pump. It is also very important that the entire pump is submerged in water before operation. This is vital for preventing any air bubbles in the water system. Operating a dry water pump can cause irreversible damage to it. All good pumps should last around 10 years.

Safety when fetching water

There are also a few points to remember when fetching water. Always wash your hands before using any water tap, use an aquaroll when possible to prevent back injury, and ensure water containers are clean.
